Balloon Wars: An ISR* Operators Account of the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

* Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance

In May of 2007 I went to Baghdad with my team to help operate a surveillance system for the U.S. Army. That summer was when the "surge' was in full swing and the equipment that we were to operate had the potential to be a big help to our troops and the Iraqi Army. It only took a couple of weeks for us to discover what our million-dollar camera, attached to the belly of a tethered, 56,000 cubic foot balloon could do. In the months that followed we occupied the high ground in a way that had never been done before and I lived in a manner I'd never known. "Balloon Wars" is a memoir about a year in Baghdad and seven months in Afghanistan as a war zone contractor, the dangers, hardships and rewards that come with the lifestyle, and the constant failures and occasional victories that occur due to the network of interests that exist in and around an Army at war.
